So this happened...

Don't know if it was the phase of the moon, or just my usual manic self expressing itself, but I embarked on a new journey last night.

After squatting on my domain SooGuy.com for several years with grandiose plans to make it my Author Blog, I finally took the initiative to install Wordpress on there and get a blog set up.

But wait...there's more!

My incentive for installing Wordpress and creating a blog was not just to bore people with my sad tales of being rejected by various publishing markets, I decided that this was the year that I was going to review ALL of Johnny Depp's films. Yup, you heard right - all 43 films in which he stars or makes an appearance, assuming I can get my hands on all of them.

My love of Depp and his acting is no secret, especially here at LJ where I've had Depp-centric icons almost from Day One. One of the reasons I chose this year to blog about it is because 2013 will mark Depp's 50th birthday and 30 years since he's been in the acting business. Yes, my dear friends, we and Mr. Depp are getting older by the minute!

So without re-capping the entire blog post, I invite you to check out my newest endeavour - A Guy Named Soo and my initial entry.

Going to try to do the movies in chronological order starting with Nightmare on Elm Street. I am not sure if I am going to be able to get my hands on all the films, but I am going to try.

I may have to resort to watching Depp's 1997 directorial debut "The Brave", which was never released in North America, on YouTube in parts if I can't find it anywhere else.

Post - Writing about Blade Runer

Just started writing a lengthy post about Blade Runner and its influence on me. I rewatched it last night on Blu-Ray. Wow, been writing the post for almost an hour on it and still haven't got to the meat of it.

Yikes!

I guess I am going to have to mark it private and finish it later.

Consider this either a teaser or a warning that I will be making a LONG post in the near future about Blade Runner.

I rarely purge my Friends List and if you are reading this, chances are you won't be one of the purged. I am basically thinking of pruning some accounts that are no longer active on here, or people that have basically checked in once in the past 6 months to post about how then never update any more.

One of the reasons I have enjoyed LJ so much over the years was the interaction with people on here. Posting here for the sake of posting doesn't have a lot of interest to me. I might as well make the entire thing private and write stream of consciousness shit.

EDIT: I pruned a dozen or so accounts. Most hadn't update in more than 2 yrs. If you check in here and find yourself one of the ones I cut and would like to get back in touch. Please leave me a message. Nothing personal about the cuts, just weeding out those people that are not updating. Having said that I made a couple exceptions to the rule for people that I wish were still posting here and secretly hope they return.

I also unfriended two friends ladyoflight2004 and sadsong that have passed away several years ago. I couldn't bring myself to unfriend their orphaned accounts until now.

Given the choice of time travel, would you go back in time or forward?

Assuming I was travelling in time to spy on my own life...

I think backward as long as I couldn't change the past, just observe.

If I went ahead in time I think I would get all freaked out about what I saw and trying to figure out how I got there. When I came back to the present I think I would be paralyzed wondering if I was making the right decision everytime I had to make a choice.

What would you name a new planet?

Bob was the first thing that came to mind, but I like George too.

This is my planet, and I shall call him George and hug him and squeeze him....

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction? Explain why.

I read more fiction than non-fiction so I guess that's my preference. I do however enjoy a good non-fiction book and try to read a couple a year to exercise my brain and give my brain new things to mull over.

What do you like best about your city or hometown? What do you want to change?

I love the natural beauty and ruggedness of the Canadian shield. There are literally hundreds of lakes within the city limits and it makes for a very beautiful landscape.

What do I want to change. A large portion of the population is stuck in the 50s or 60s and are not very open-minded or forward thinking.

This could be such an oasis if we stopped being resistant to change and ideas that challenge our own perspective.

If you could travel through time with someone you know, who would you choose, and why?

I'd hook up with an older or younger version of myself (in a non-bibical sensse!) and see how much an asshole I really am.

Travelling through time with yourself could be fun annoying at the same time.

If you've never read David Gerrold's "The Man Who Folded Himself" do yourself a favour.

REJECTION: The Anthology

I was pitching this idea to my writing group a couple of weeks ago and I can't stop thinking about it.

I am envisioning an anthology that is part literary criticism and part new "unpublished" fiction meant as cautionary tell to encourage struggling writers not to give up. We've all heard the legendary tales of authors who were rejected multiple times by publishers that went onto phenomenal success.

I would love to get writers in a variety of genres, but especially Fantasy and SF to contribute a "trunked" short story and at least one accompanying rejection related to the story. I don't want stories that actually went on to get published, but rather flawed ones that DESERVE to be rejected. Aye, there's the rub.

I'd also want writer's that participated to critique their own story, or perhaps the original publisher that rejected it to explain why it was RIGHTLY rejected, what they learnt from the story and how they applied it in their future work.

I think it would demystify the writing/rejection/publishing of short stories for beginner writers and hopefully encourage fledgling writers to stick with their craft and GET BETTER.

The logistics of coordinating such an undertaking would be huge and require a lot of networking and connection I don't have. I am not even sure a publisher would see any market for such a collection.

Thoughts comments?

Would you read a "rejected" and "flawed" short story by your favourite author? Maybe I need to start a public blog post to get this rolling. Or a "Kickstarter" page.

If you could have any vehicle (a helicopter, sports car, space ship, yacht, etc.) and a free place to park it, what would you choose, and why?

A time machine, d'uh. I am not picky, TARDIS, Delorean, a WAYBAC or even the original Time Machine will do.
